A new approach to China: an update

On January 12, we announced on this blog that Google and more than twenty other U.S. companies had been the victims of a sophisticated cyber attack originating from China, and that during our investigation into these attacks we had uncovered evidence to suggest that the Gmail accounts of dozens of human rights activists connected with China were being routinely accessed by third parties, most likely via phishing scams or malware placed on their computers. We also made clear that these attacks and the surveillance they uncovered—combined with attempts over the last year to further limit free speech on the web in China including the persistent blocking of websites such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Google Docs and Blogger—had led us to conclude that we could no longer continue censoring our results on Google.cn.

So earlier today we stopped censoring our search services—Google Search, Google News, and Google Images—on Google.cn. Users visiting Google.cn are now being redirected to Google.com.hk, where we are offering uncensored search in simplified Chinese, specifically designed for users in mainland China and delivered via our servers in Hong Kong. Users in Hong Kong will continue to receive their existing uncensored, traditional Chinese service, also from Google.com.hk. Due to the increased load on our Hong Kong servers and the complicated nature of these changes, users may see some slowdown in service or find some products temporarily inaccessible as we switch everything over.

Figuring out how to make good on our promise to stop censoring search on Google.cn has been hard. We want as many people in the world as possible to have access to our services, including users in mainland China, yet the Chinese government has been crystal clear throughout our discussions that self-censorship is a non-negotiable legal requirement. We believe this new approach of providing uncensored search in simplified Chinese from Google.com.hk is a sensible solution to the challenges we’ve faced—it’s entirely legal and will meaningfully increase access to information for people in China. We very much hope that the Chinese government respects our decision, though we are well aware that it could at any time block access to our services. We will therefore be carefully monitoring access issues, and have created this new web page, which we will update regularly each day, so that everyone can see which Google services are available in China.

In terms of Google’s wider business operations, we intend to continue R&D work in China and also to maintain a sales presence there, though the size of the sales team will obviously be partially dependent on the ability of mainland Chinese users to access Google.com.hk. Finally, we would like to make clear that all these decisions have been driven and implemented by our executives in the United States, and that none of our employees in China can, or should, be held responsible for them. Despite all the uncertainty and difficulties they have faced since we made our announcement in January, they have continued to focus on serving our Chinese users and customers. We are immensely proud of them.

中广网北京3月3日消息 由华谊兄弟、20世纪福斯及星空传媒联合出品的爱情贺岁片《全城热恋》上映三周，内地票房超过1.1亿。华谊兄弟总裁王中磊透露，《全城热恋》投资在1800万左右，预计内地票房可以超过1.2亿，投资回报率相当可观。本片的两位导演夏永康和陈国辉表示，将继续合作拍摄新片，除了爱情喜剧外，还有可能拍摄武侠片。为了庆祝电影的热卖，两位导演还制作了精良的幕后花絮，张曼玉、徐若瑄、段奕宏等片中明星的另一面都曝光在镜头前。
　　　　

　　“热恋”投资回报率高

　　王中磊说，《全城热恋》中的很多明星都是导演的朋友，所以在片酬成本这方面控制得很好，总投资只有1800万，但票房已经超过了1.1亿，预计将达到1.2亿。此外，《全城热恋》的胶片拷贝只有不到400个，并没有像其他大片那样动辄拷贝上千，而是选择了在收入比较多的城市集中放映，将都市白领锁定为主要观众群。此外，《全城热恋》的数字拷贝产出很高，达到了总票房的45%左右。

　　经历了《拉贝日记》、《追影》的票房失利后，华谊出品的《风声》、《全城热恋》票房都突破了一亿。王中磊表示，华谊与陈国辉、夏永康这对新导演合作非常成功，《全城热恋》在定位、制作、营销等方面都达到了很好的工作成绩。华谊在上市之后得到了很多资本，所以做项目的专业度和认真度都有加强，因为是花股民的钱，所以更要有专业的支持。王中磊认为，有才华的导演与华谊合作，得到的市场回馈与实际能力会成正比。有的导演有才华，但是在不好的机制里会很难有发挥。
　　　　

　　导演人缘促成电影出路

　　《全城热恋》是夏永康和陈国辉两位导演独立执导的首部长片，票房就顺利过亿，这让他俩感到十分兴奋。夏永康坦言一开始并没有刻意迎合市场，只是想自己“玩一次”，但不曾想内地的观众很买账。陈国辉告诉新浪娱乐，一开始并没有得到与投资人见面的机会，“二十世纪福斯来香港要见很多有名的导演，但是有一个人临时取消了约会，我们在半小时前得知了这一消息，中间人问我们愿不愿意去，我们就过去之后把《全城热恋》故事和想要邀请的演员告诉了他们，他们说如果你们能把这些演员都邀请来，我们就开拍。”

　　陈国辉表示，他和夏永康认识很多演员朋友，在得知可以有机会开拍电影的时候，就马上分别去邀请明星，“我先去找吴彦祖，夏永康去找谢霆锋，他俩很快就答应了。随后就是张学友、大S、刘若英和徐若瑄，他们看过剧本之后也很快就同意了。”
　　　　

　　没拍好段奕宏很遗憾

　　有观众认为，段奕宏与付辛博那一段故事比较生硬，有凑数之嫌。陈国辉对此表示是自己的责任，“段奕宏的故事剧本比较完整，也更搞笑一点，但是剪出来的效果不太好。他的故事不是讲爱情的，和其他故事感觉不一样，而恰好我们是最早拍得他们，当时剧组还没有进入状态，其实应该像刘若英和张学友那段一样，喜剧多一点就好了。”

　　陈国辉还透露，本来曾经拍下了谢霆锋从后面抱住大S的戏份，但是由于过于拖沓被迫删除。据导演称，本来大S要在电影中交代自己父亲的故事，大S骑得那辆单车就是死去父亲留下的。不过后来考虑到已经在谢霆锋的故事里描写了一段父子情，就只好忍痛割爱了。
　　　　

　　新片将延续“双导演”制

　　夏永康表示，下部电影还将和陈国辉继续合作。陈国辉告诉新浪娱乐，目前手上有好几个计划，一个是讲述在国外的华人回家的故事，“我在外国长大，觉得外国不一定比中国好。其实每个地方都有中国人，纽约、洛杉矶都有唐人街，我就在想这些异乡人回家的故事拍出来应该很好玩。”此外，他俩还酝酿拍摄武侠功夫片，“每一个中国导演都想拍自己的《卧虎藏龙》，我们也不例外。在演员选择方面我们会采用新人和大牌混搭的策略。还有就是也想拍一部爱情喜剧。”

　　《全城热恋》在香港票房不佳，陈国辉表示主要是因为戏院排片不够多，没有争取到好的放映机会。夏永康则无奈地说：“这些东西我们也是无能为力，我接下来要好好研究一下内地观众的想法，争取下一部电影更好。”
